 Semaglutide is a FDA-approved injectable medication administered once per week used for weight management in patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or in patients with a BMI of 27 or higher who also have one or more weight-related condition(s), like type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. 

Semaglutide works by slowing down the gastric emptying. When the stomach takes more time to empty itself of food, it sends signals of “fullness’ to the brain. The result of this process is a powerful appetite suppression effect based on the individual’s own natural insulin production. This will allow the benefit of weight loss without the use of stimulants. Additionally, a Semaglutide regimen will lead to healthier blood sugar levels, which can help patients feel more energetic and may help improve overall health. 

Side effects may include:

• Nausea and vomiting
• Constipation and diarrhea
• Gas, bloating, abdominal pain
• Fatigue or headache

There are also less-common side effects, such as allergic reactions, kidney problems, and low blood sugar. Also, in people with heart problems, it can damage the retina of the eye in some cases.

If either of these conditions have been recorded in either your personal history or your family history, you should avoid taking Semaglutide:

• Medullary thyroid carcinoma
• Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2
